Bothell King County DUI Lawyer: I-405 DUI Defendant has a Past

Bothell King County DUI Lawyer:  I-405 DUI Defendant has a Past

BOTHELL, Wash. -- The driver accused of triggering a six-car crash on an Interstate 405 on-ramp has had driving troubles in the past, KOMO News has learned.
It was on the highest ramp of Interstate 405 that a semi truck lost control and slammed into guard rails and light poles just after midnight on Wednesday. The truck fell on its side, spreading debris all over the roadway and causing at least six other cars to crash.
Troopers say the truck, driven by Anthony Saputski of Rathdrum, Idaho, was headed west on State Route 522, taking the on-ramp onto southbound I-405 when it lost control, taking out the guardrail and several light poles. The roadway was shut down in both directions for hours.
A check of the 30-year-old driver's background shows more than 10 driving violations in Idaho, including three speeding tickets and a DUI from 2001. And just last year in Washington state, Saputski was charged with driving a commercial truck with alcohol in his system. Court records indicate he later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of negligent driving.
The driver told KOMO News he passed several breathalyzer tests Wednesday morning. But state troopers say they found enough evidence at the scene to investigate Saputski for DUI.

Seattle King County DUI Lawyer: BUI boaters face similar penalties to DUI drivers

Seattle King County DUI Lawyer:  BUI boaters face similar penalties to DUI drivers

The following story is from Komo News in Seattle, Washington.

SEATTLE -- Two boat operators were arrested for investigation of boating under the influence four hours apart in Seattle, King County.  And it turned out, they were both operating the same boat.
Around 1:30 p.m., a boat was stopped for going into restricted area in King County. Officials then arrested the operator, Joseph Dalrymple, for boating under the influence. Police say he told them, "I made arrangements to have a sober person with me so I could drink."
Then, around 5:40 p.m., the same boat was stopped again for going into a restricted area. And again, the boat's operator -- this time Thomas Hutchison, was arrested for investigation of boating under the influence.
Both men were booked into the King County Jail, Seattle.

Marysville Snohomish County Drunk Driving Lawyer: Washington State Patrol wins award for DUI arrests

Marysville Snohomish County Drunk Driving Lawyer: Washington State Patrol wins award for DUI arrests

Congratulations to the Washington State Patrol and their effort to stop drunk driving in Snohomish and King Counties, including the I-5 corridor between Seattle and Everett and the I-405 stretch in the Kirkland, Bellevue, and Redmond area.  Despite my bantering and occasional criticism, they are the acknowledged experts and by and large do a very good job at stopping and arresting DUI drivers or those suspected of drunk driving.

The Washington State Patrol has been named by its peers as the top agency in North America when it comes to getting drunken drivers off the road, KING-5 reports.

The award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police recognizes an agency's "year-round efforts to detect and apprehend impaired drivers and to address impaired driving through policies, officer training, and public information and education," according to state police.

"We consider every DUI arrest a potential life saved," said State Patrol Chief John R. Batiste in a news release. "We never know which drunks will kill, but we know with certainty that some of them will."

State troopers arrest about 20,000 impaired drivers each year, which is about half the number police agencies arrest statewide, according to WSP. Read full story.

Lynnwood Everett Drunk Driving Lawyers: DUI charge dismissed against RFK Jr.'s wife in NY

Lynnwood Everett Drunk Driving Lawyers:  DUI charge dismissed against RFK Jr.'s wife in NY

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s wife no longer faces a charge of driving under the influence of drugs in New York's Hudson Valley.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s wife no longer faces a charge of driving under the influence of drugs in New York's Hudson Valley.

A judge says evidence shows Mary Richardson Kennedy was unaware that medications she had taken would impair her ability to drive when she was arrested by state police on Aug. 21, 2010.

She was initially pulled over for speeding on the Taconic State Parkway, but police said they determined she was under the influence of a prescription medication.

Pleasant Valley Town Justice Paul Caltagirone (kal-TAHG'-ah-rohn) dismissed the charge Friday.

He noted in his decision that prosecutors opposed the motion.

Kennedy was arrested one month after a judge suspended her license following her guilty plea of driving while impaired near her Bedford home on May 15.

Everett Snohomish County Drunk Driving Editorial: “Far harsher penalties needed”

Everett Snohomish County Drunk Driving Editorial: "Far harsher penalties needed"

Editorial from the Everett Herald in Snohomish County

Apparently familiarity breeds acceptance, because a deadly scourge continues in our society.
What else explains our failure to make driving under the influence a crime that carries an unimaginably harsh penalty? What explains a three-year maximum sentence for "vehicular homicide"? Does such a law imply that we simply accept that a certain number of us are going to die at the drunken and/or angry hands of others when we drive, bike or walk on our roadways? Does it imply that an individual's "right to drive" is only slightly less important than a person's "right to life"?
Everyone knows that drinking and driving can be deadly. Yet first-time DUI offenders, even those who kill others, are often given a break because they have no previous record. (People with multiple arrests reflect the lack of serious consequences.)
If people faced permanently losing their license for even one DUI violation, we might prevent the anguish of seeing lives and families destroyed -- drivers and victims alike.
A recent sampling:
•In January, Camille Spink, 28, was sentenced to seven years for the 2010 wrong-way crash in Everett that killed Sheena Blair, 24, and Martin "Tony" Ramirez, 19. Luis Reyna and Marco Ortiz, both 18, suffered serious injuries.
In June, William Reardon, 43, was sentenced to three years after admitting he was drunk in August 2010 when he drove his pickup off Highway 99, killing Anita Sharma as she talked with a friend outside a Lynnwood pub.
In June, Theresa Ecklund, 43, out on bail in connection with the December death of a pedestrian, David Johnson, in Marysville, was arrested again on suspicion of drunken driving.
On July 27, Patrick Rexroat, 56, of Snohomish, was charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving for killing Steve Lacey of Kirkland on July 24 in an apparent road rage/DUI crash. Lacey had nothing to do with the road rage incident.
On July 29, Meghan Stivers, 26, of Lake Stevens, was killed when a man driving a Dodge truck hit her vehicle while trying to elude police attempting to pull him over on suspicion of DUI.
In January, Frank Blair, father of a victim Sheena Blair, 24, who was on track to graduate from college with a degree in criminal justice, told the court:
"I think today's sentencing sends the message that vehicular homicide due to DUI is taken seriously. I hope it also sends a message that you don't have to be a bad person to kill when you're drinking and driving. We hope people will consider all five families and make the decision not to drink and drive."
Harsh penalties would help.
